About ten minutes after I left the GoPro, this tricolored heron landed in its usual fishing spot. The heron had a good New Year’s Day morning fishing.
Like little blue herons, tricoloreds eat mostly very small fish, and a lot of them. They also eat crustaceans (crayfish, prawns), insects (aquatic insects and grasshoppers), tadpoles, frogs, salamanders, lizards, spiders.
The heron also checked out the camera (or maybe the small, red blinking light that’s on when it is recording). But fortunately, the heron wasn’t distracted from fishing for long!
At about 47 seconds into this part of the video, the heron is investigating.
