A half-hour or so earlier, this Great Blue Heron was standing hidden back in the marsh grass.
And this large Pileated Woodpecker was going to work up in a narrow Cypress. Her methodical drumming echoed through the Cypress marsh, and chips of bark were falling down when I took these photographs.
Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge includes 145,800 acres stretching deep into northern Everglades habitat. The Friends of Loxahatchee group has posted some cool new aerial photos of the refuge on their Web site. See this post from last May for another Loxahatchee sunset.
