We wanted to try somewhere new, a hike that we didn’t have to drive to far to get to. So we headed out to Hypolouxo Scrub Natural Area. It turned out to be a nice late-afternoon hike through the flatwoods.
The 1.5-mile Eastern Pondhawk trail loop is a good place to wander the flatwoods, and there are a few other trails that stem off the main loop. We saw a few cardinals, an Eastern Racer, and a Florida Scrub-jay that flickered off before I could get a photograph. I think I’ll have to take another visit to see if I can get a few good photos of one of the Scrub Jays at the Hypoluxo preserve. Only a short segment of the trails are shaded, so the best time to go would be early in the morning or later in the day.
