Kayaking Oleta River State Park

Kayaking the mangrove tributaries of Biscayne Bay in Oleta River State Park, we encountered calm water and a light breeze.

Paddling these “kayak underpasses” was fun because we didn’t know what was on the other side…

Don’t worry, it was just more calm water and mangroves. These mangrove paths open to Biscayne Bay if you continue south. Although, being a Saturday, there was a lot of boat traffic in the bay. Paddling further north, more of the mostly-shaded and cool pathways open up to curious paddlers.

The best place to launch a kayak at Oleta River State Park is almost directly west of parking lot Number Six, which is a littler further into the main parking area. A park ranger told me about this small launch, where you can back right up and drop the kayak, then park your vehicle.

This is a more serene launch than the much busier kayak drop where they rent the kayaks out, located just before you enter the parking area.
