Red-shouldered hawk pair

This capture shows the upperwing “red shoulder” of the hawk, one half of the couple we’ve been seeing recently at Myakka River State Park.

The hawk was getting into something in the creek.

The other hawk was not far, this one successfully snatching up a small snake.

Very cool documentation, Roger. I wonder what that hawk possibly could have seen in that dark muck.

Thanks, Jan! I thought he was fishing for a snake, or frog maybe, but then it looked like he snatched up a snail. Not sure if red-shouldered hawks eat snails, but he certainly got down there in the muck, and didn’t mind the photographer quietly watching!
